Hands-on service, as well as the funding of worthy causes, characterizes the Santa Maria Rotary South's priorities. Investing time in actually touching lives is the watchword. Water and helping hands serves as the theme the club follows for international efforts; food and helping hands serves as a community theme.

The FoodBank and the Good Samaritan Shelter are favorite recipients of Rotary South food-related support. The Club not only donates funds, but helps out - sorting and packing food supplies at the FoodBank, preparing and serving meals at the homeless shelter. Every winter holiday season Rotary South also provides bellringers for the Salvation Army donation cans around town.

In 2008, in conjunction with Child Protective Services, Rotary South sponsored a family day at the DiscoveryMuseum, designed to allow foster family networking and linkage among foster kids.

Rotary South members also annually participate in the International Rotary Work Day initiative, which sees Rotarians worldwide pitching in to improve their communities and their neighbors' lives. Rotary South has taken on numerous "fix-it" projects for seniors and others around town, repairing steps, weeding rose gardens, fixing fences, and generally giving local seniors and other families a helping hand.

Rotary South conceived of the Winter Wonderland activity which is held in conjunction with the Parade of Lights downtown every December. Every year Club members arrange for a "mountain of 'snow'" to be brought in and help young children experience the joys of sliding down a frosty hill.

In addition, Rotary South members  walk in the Cancer Society's Relay for Life, and support other nonprofit events as well. The Club also hosts youth from the local Boys and Girls Club for dinner and holiday gift giving at its annual Christmas party..

Rotary South's commitment to the community has spanned several decades and shows no sign of decreasing!
